Renovate AI vs CAD Mockups. When to Use Each in 2026
CAD mockups have owned kitchen and bathroom presentations for two decades. Photorealistic Renovate AI room mockups are a faster tool for a specific job. Here is when to reach for each.

CAD mockups (2020 Design, Chief Architect, SketchUp) have owned kitchen and bathroom presentations for two decades. They work. They are also slow, expensive to run, and require a dedicated designer or a lot of your own time. Photorealistic renovate ais are a newer, faster tool for a specific job. They do not replace CAD, they replace the wait.
When to use Renovate AI
- The first client meeting. Snap a photo, show 3 style directions in 5 minutes. This is where preview shines and CAD cannot compete on turnaround.
- Selling on style not layout. If the layout is not changing and the decision is really about finishes (cabinet color, countertop material, backsplash pattern, floor tone), preview is more persuasive than a CAD render because it shows the actual space, not a generic modeled one.
- Fast iteration in the walkthrough. Client says "I do not like the dark cabinets, can we see it lighter?" Preview generates a new option in 30 seconds. In CAD that would be a callback.
- Exterior and small refresh work. Siding replacement, front door refresh, deck stain color. CAD is overkill. Preview lands the sale on the first visit.
When to still use CAD
- Layout changes. Moving a wall, changing the island size, adding a peninsula. CAD is the only tool that shows accurate spatial dimensions and clearance.
- Cabinet spec presentations for high end projects. When the client is choosing between semi custom and full custom cabinet layouts, they need the exact cabinet plan document that CAD produces.
- Contractor to sub handoff. Framers, plumbers, and electricians need scaled drawings, not photorealistic renders. CAD is the right tool for the shop drawings.
- Permit submissions. Most jurisdictions require CAD drawings for permits. Preview is not a substitute.
The workflow that combines both
The best renovation shops in 2026 use both tools in sequence. Preview for the initial client sell, then CAD once the project is signed and layout details need to be finalised. This order works because it uses each tool for what it is best at without waiting for either.
- First client walkthrough. Preview generates 3 style options on the spot. Client picks a direction.
- Signed estimate. Client is now committed to a design direction.
- CAD work begins. Designer produces exact cabinet layout, dimensional drawings, permit set.
- Preview generates the final finish render for hero use in marketing (Instagram, storefront portfolio).
Cost comparison
2020 Design licence is roughly $2,000 per year plus a dedicated designer or your own hours to run it. Chief Architect starts around $2,500. SketchUp Studio is $749 per year plus the same design labor.
Renovate ships Renovate AI inside Pro ($29.99 per month, 50 previews) or Pro Plus ($59.99 per month, 100 previews). It does not replace CAD for permit or shop drawings, but it eliminates 80 percent of the pre sale design labor.
