How job cost turns into a price

Direct cost is labor plus materials plus subcontractors. Overhead is a percent added on top of direct cost to cover the costs of running the business. Together they give you the total job cost.

The price is total cost divided by one minus your target margin. A $23,000 cost at a 25% margin needs a $30,667 price. Quoting $23,000 plus 25% would leave you with a margin of only 20%.

Common questions.

Short answers. Anything else, just ask us.

What goes into the cost of a job?

Labor hours at your real cost per hour, materials, subcontractors, and a share of overhead such as insurance, vehicles, software and office time.

How should I set overhead?

Add up a year of business costs that are not tied to one job, divide by your yearly direct costs, and use that percent. Many remodelers land between 10% and 20%.

Why does the price use margin and not markup?

Margin is the share of the price you keep, so it is the number that pays for the business. The calculator also shows the markup that margin needs.

Is anything saved or sent?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored.

Can I track job cost on real estimates?

Yes. Hello Renovate stores unit cost and price for every line item, so cost and margin show on an estimate before you send it.
